Did Rihanna's Fenty Foundation Just Change the Makeup Game?

The new Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation might be the boost the makeup industry needs to create more inclusive foundation shades.

Rihanna's new makeup line launched on September 8, 2017 and has taken the internet and the beauty industry by storm. Her new makeup line, Fenty Beauty, includes blotting powder, concealer, highlight, lip paint, and the widely popular foundation, the Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. This foundation, in particular, has sent YouTube and beauty bloggers into a flurry of reviews and praise towards Rihanna and her line.

Why is this foundation so incredible?

40 shades. You heard me. Rihanna launched 40 shades all at once ranging from cool-toned fair to very deep. Launching this many shades, especially when it is the brand's first debut, is unheard of in the beauty community. Shade 100, the lightest shade, is a neutral-toned shade for the fairest of skins suitable for people with albinism. Shade 490, the deepest shade, is a very deep, cool-toned shade. The makeup industry is notorious for lacking in the very deep and very pale ranges of makeup products. Even companies that have been around for years are still lacking in their shade ranges. However, Rihanna's success with her newly released foundation might just inspire the beauty industry to begin launching more inclusive shades. This a completely new brand, and it still had the capability to launch this many shades. It doesn't leave the other brands with many good excuses to leave out the fair and deep shades from their lines.

Nyma Tang, a popular youtube artist known for testing the darkest shades of a variety of foundations, completed her review on the Fenty foundation praising Rihanna for including the deeper skin tones in her launch.

John Maclean, a YouTuber known for testing the lightest shades of foundations, also tested the Fenty foundation but did say that the lightest shade in the Huda beauty line is much lighter than Fenty. However, John was impressed by the finish and the longevity of the formula.

For another shade reference, Rihanna's go-to shade is 390. Depending on the time of year and how much sun she has had, she will alternate between one shade lighter and a couple shades darker. When you are stuck deciding between two shades, Rihanna says go with the lighter shade to make room for any oxidation that might occur when the foundation dries on your skin.

As for formula, the Fenty foundation is a buildable, medium-to-full coverage foundation that has a soft matte finish. It claims to diffuse pores and leaves no shine on the skin. It is also oil-free and will last through sweat and humidity. It is 100 percent cruelty free and is developed without parabens or phthalates. One of the main ingredients is dimethicone, which is a silicon-based ingredient used as a conditioning agent for the skin. For a full breakdown of ingredients, go to...

This website is fantastic for checking the ingredients of beauty products. The only ingredient of high concern is the fragrance, due to its ability to irritate people with sensitive allergies to scents.

Looking at the price of $34, the bottle contains 1.08 oz. of product, slightly more than the average foundation bottle. On the Fenty Beauty website, it is rated 4.2 out of 5 stars and 83 percent of reviews stated they would recommend the product to others.

Fenty Beauty has been extremely successful since its launch, and we can count on more great products to come. My personal favorite product from the line is the Stunna Lip Paint, which is a universal red matte lip paint. On another note, did you know that Fenty is Rihanna's last name?

All in all, this success should speak to the creators of the beauty industry. As for other brands, we hope they expand their umbrella-ella-ella of shades in their foundations. Until then, shop Fenty!
