The decade of 2000s was truly a decade of shimmer and colors, when people enjoyed trying out the latest trends like chunky hair highlights to glossy AF lips. Entering the new century, the beauty world was booming with new ideas and everyone was getting creative—including makeup. Makeup from the 2000s was just beginning to rise where cosmetic brands were releasing bright and bolder colors for makeup lovers to test out. It was truly the decade of experimenting with makeup, and it was surely a stunning era.

However, compared to today, makeup trends in 2018 are much more dramatic. With highlighted faces, daring lips, and striking eye looks, makeup today is completelydifferent as how it was more than a decade ago. Now there's sharp winged eyeliners, contouring, highlighting, cut creases, and newer trends that everyone is currently doing. But did you know that aspects from the makeup in the 2000s are showing up even to this day? It's true! Most of us don't realize that we're practically doing all those wacky and ridiculous makeup trends from the past. Even though most of us happen to use the decade-old makeup craze, we're giving them a touch of the more modern-day look. See if you're doing any of the makeup trends of the 2000s without noticing yourself!

Neon Eyeliner

Since there's a much wider selection of colors in makeup today, some of us tend to be very vibrant in our looks—including colorful eyeliners. A decade ago, people were rocking neon blue eyeliners on their top eyelids... without winging it! Terrible, I know. But not so long ago, we ridiculed these individuals for wearing such tacky eyeliner. Come on, blue eyeliner?

But now the majority of those people are taking their words right back as they themselves apply on the blue eyeliners, like this one by Bobbi Brown. It's not just blue eyeliners they're playing around with, but green, yellow, purple, any color you can think of. The best part about bringing back the colorful eyeliner is that they're winging it! And it looks stunning if you're a daring person who can't settle on just plain black eyeliner.

Lipliners

Oh, this is a major one among the makeup trends of the 2000s we've mocked before. Did you see how common lipliners were in the past? Most importantly, how distinct they looked on the lips? It basically looked like you applied a solid lipstick on, ate a full meal, and went on with your day with just the lipstick outlining your lips. It was pretty horrible, I'm not going to lie. And believe it or not... it's come back. The lipliners have resurrected from the dead and are back in action.

Since liquid lipsticks are widely popular now, makeup addicts everywhere are using lipliners to line their lips before applying the liquid lipstick. Whether the lipliner and lipstick are matching from a set like the Retro Luxe Matte Lip Kit by Makeup Revolution, people tend to also use different color lipliner and lipstick for an "ombré" affect. This makes the lipliner appear more distinctly on the lips... something we've made fun of in the past.

Metallic Eyeshadows

Remember those horrible-looking frosty eyeshadows nearly every single celebrity wore on the red carpets, during concerts, or just about any place where they wanted to look fabulous? Yeah, those frosty eyeshadows. It would make someone look like the Tinman punched her right in both eyes. And the sides of the eyeshadow weren't even blended out properly! Those harsh lines scarred me for a decade.

But now those frosty eyelids have turned into gorgeous metallic eyeshadows that people are going crazy over, like the Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow by Stila. For that pop of shimmer on the center of their eyes, or even all over the eyelids, makeup lovers everywhere are getting super creative with the metallic look. They've even added glitter for that extra shimmer whenever they turn their head. And this time, they're properly blending out the sides of the eyeshadow. Thank you, Lord.

Glossy Lips

The glossy lips that were so glossy, strands of our hair would constantly get caught on them... are coming back. Among the makeup trends of the 2000s, glossy lips were huge! Everyone wore lip gloss sometime in their life. But I'm not talking about a light coat of gloss, I mean heavy-ass, chunky lip gloss that would sometimes dribble down their lips. Gross, I know. However, it's actually a trend even now.

We may not be applying globs of lip gloss onto our lips anymore, but we're still wearing plain gloss over our lips for a more kissable look. An amazing lip gloss with a slight tint to it is the tinted lip gloss by Paul & Joe. Many people are really into color gloss for the pigment, too. Either way, gloss didn't die down and it may never now.

Colorful Eyeshadows

Similar to the neon eyeliners a decade ago, those colorful eyeshadows were super cringeworthy and tacky at the time. They loved blue eyeshadow. It wasn't even the nice blue shadow, it was actually the most tasteless, palest, and weirdest blue eyeshadow we've ever seen. Not to mention purple was among their favorites to wear on the lids, too.

While it's one of the makeup trends of the 2000s that we absolutely hated, we're loving it now. In today's eyeshadow variety... we have quite the variety. Eyeshadow palettes like Online Only Hollywood 24 Shade Eyeshadow Palette by J.Cat Beauty features a stunning, colorful selection. However, the blue eyeshadows we wear today are bold and daring. The purple shadows we smoke out are super pigmented like the pedals of a lavender. Eyeshadows now are so pigmented and heavy, they're not even viewed as tacky anymore. In fact, if we caught someone wearing bright, royal blue eyeshadow a decade ago, we would've laughed at them. But since times have changed and so has makeup, anyone can wear any color and still slay the game.

Rosy Cheeks

The rosier the cheeks, the sweeter you are! I'm kidding, that's not true. Yet, people ten years ago did love layering blush on their cheeks for that flushed look; it was one of the makeup trends of the 2000s. As pale as some of their skins were, they wanted to achieve that rosy cheek look. Some of them even came out looking like clowns... in my opinion.

Shortly after that trend died down, it came right back up again and makeup artists are digging the rosy look. Since all we do is splash on foundation and contour to cover up any form of redness on our skin, we start to look like walking corpses with no life on our faces. So, in order to bring that life back onto our faces, we apply a generous amount of blush. You know, to look alive and well again. Plus, I personally love the light, rosy cheek look like this gorgeous blush by Lottie!

Chunky Eyelashes

I can recall about ten years ago in middle school, so many girls in my class would copy the trend of layering and layering... and layering mascara for that chunky eyelash look. It looked like a spider crawled up onto their eyes and died there. That's how horrible the chunky eyelashes were, practically looking like spider legs. And we all couldn't be any more glad to watch that trend immediately plummet, because no one deserves to be talking to someone with spider eyelashes.

As much as we've hated it in the past, those lashes have returned darker and longer than ever, only with a glamorous look to it. Yes, so many people enjoy clumping their eyelashes, but they're making their lashes appear thicker and longer without the clumps. A personal favorite for thicker and longer lashes is Too Faced's Better Than Sex mascara! Or people simply wearing false lashes for longer-looking lashes.

Smokey Under Eyes

Avril Lavigne, the queen of smokey under eyes, created one of the biggest makeup trends of the 2000s. She inspired so many individuals to do the same and create really dark smokey eyes that made them look like raccoons. Legit, raccoons.

Now, makeup lovers everywhere are still doing the smokey under eyes, but with less black and more colors! Sure, there are people out there who can still pull off the smokey black under eyes, but it's been switched with vibrant colors to give eyes a more dramatic pop! A palette with beautiful eyeshadows for that dramatic under eye is the Smoked Eyeshadow Palette by Urban Decay Cosmetics. With a smokey under eye and bold falsies, it's certainly an eye-catching look.

Crystals

Studs, stones, crystals, all of these have never left the makeup trends of the 2000s! Intense makeup lovers today are always trying to find ways to slip a few crystals into their best eye looks for that enchanting and magical appearance. Not to mention that crystals for makeup looks are widely popular for festival, concert, mermaid, and even unicorn looks!

While it was a hot trend a decade ago, today's use of stones has evolved tremendously. With so many colors, shapes, and sizes to choose from, you can create so many makeup looks with them. The Self-Adhesive Rhinestones Bulk Pack by Cortesia includes an array of crystals and rhinestones to choose from. And adding crystals to a look is like adding sprinkles to a sundae!

Dewy Skin

A dewy skin is the last among the makeup trends of the 2000s that people are bringing back today. Ten years ago, the way people wore dewy skin was mainly skipping out on putting powder to mattify their faces. Other than that, they would actually highlight certain parts of their face for that wet look.

And that's what people are still doing today. They do apply powder to hide any oils, but it's mostly the highlighting that's doing all the work to achieve a dewy skin. Right now, highlighting is so trendy, literally anyone who wears makeup highlights either lightly or heavily... like me. In order to capture a wet look, you can highlight the high points of your face. With so many colorful face highlighters out there, you'd want to try them all, like the Rose Gold Highlighter Palette by Violet Voss!
