The Makeup Show LA 2018 once again brought its epic beauty trade show to the California Mart, November 10-11, 2018. What I always enjoy about this particular trade show is its ability to have intimate class instructions from the Pro Artists leading the various breakout training sessions. No show is complete without a list of James Vincent’s favorite beauty products for Fall/Winter 2018 and Spring 2019. On the list is Ardell Beauty, an LA-based company widely known for their affordable and great quality lashes and eyelash adhesive, DUO. Did you know that Ardell employs over 1,000 people locally and they have a conglomerate of businesses under the Ardell brand? Ardell recently launched their own brand—Ardell Cosmetics.

Main Stage Keynote Speakers offered attendees the chance to learn from professional artists impacting the beauty industry. These are chances to sit-in and watch the Pro Artists techniques; tools and brands used and ask questions relative to various clients needs. Keynote sessions and topics featured:

Saturday, November 10, 2018

  • Pati Dubroff —Celebrity Skin
  • Miss Fame—Beauty Mark: Making an Impact in Artistry
  • Jordan Liberty—Image Influence
  • Joel Harlow—Innovation in Artistry

Sunday, November 11, 2018

  • Stephanie Nicole—Social Commentator: Social Media for Makeup Pros
  • Sara Tanno—Beyond Beauty
  • Damone Roberts “The Eyebrow King”—A Beauty Career

In addition to these renowned artists and influencers, The Makeup Show offers seminars where you can get up close and personal to view the pro artists working with live models. One of my favorite sessions was having the opportunity to sit in on The Focus on Muse Beauty Pro with Alphonse Wiebelt and Ivan Jose with Muse Beauty Pro. Sitting in on this session reignited my passion for makeup and the importance of education and training in the beauty industry. Wiebelt and Jose utilized brush tools and explained the importance of using different types of brushes depending on the color depth that one wants, whether it is sable, goat or synthetic hair brushes. My personal favorite is the Esum W58, Large Round Angle Eye Contour Eye Brush. This sable-haired brush helps you to correctly place color with ultimate control and it glides and diffuses color effortlessly. The Esum W36 Small Round Angle Eye Contour Brush is the sister brush to its larger version and allows you to perform eye detailing working with your eyeshadows.

There were some great brands making their first appearance at The Makeup Show Los Angeles offering innovative techniques in beauty.

Mineral Air

Founded by YA-Man, a Japanese mineral makeup company that took it from its traditional mineral version to an airbrush formulation and application. They also created shades for a variety of skin tones to ensure that all shades are included. With Mineral Air, you can mist on a uniform veil of the smallest and most consistent version of mineral foundation that is ultra-fine and looks like skin, but the best skin you could have. They even have a mineral air blush that is amazing and compliments all skin tones. I was pleasantly surprised with the velvety smooth but natural look of my skin after applying it.

Veil Cosmetics

Sebastien Tardif, founder of Veil Cosmetics, introduced his latest product, AutoMatte Mattifying Base and Touch Up. This product is available in a universal shade that can be used as a primer, skin smoother, or to prevent shine and oil build up and it is non-caking. The Veil Sunset Skin Foundation and Primers are oil-free and water-based products that allow buildable coverage, and they dry down to a beautiful satin finish without the use of setting powder. Application is key, and Tardif explained that using your finger with a tapping motion rather than swiping it across your face ensures the most flawless skin finish.

MYO Cosmetic Cases

Vancouver-based Makeup Your Own [mi-yo] is a sustainable eco-friendly cosmetic company founded by award-winning Suzanne Carter for designing “on-the-go,” cosmetic cases for professional makeup artists and beauty enthusiasts. The MYO Cosmetic Cases are customizable with magnetic cases. If you’re a PRO Artist on set or traveling, these versatile cases are great and allow for ease of use and minimize unnecessary makeup products and bulk.

Pacifica

Pacifica Beauty, known for their cruelty-free skin care, will be launching a line of foundations that is inclusive of all shades. While one would think this would be standard in the beauty industry, unfortunately, it’s not. They currently have 30-plus shades, which will soon be 40 shades with their upcoming launch in 2019. I got a chance to sample the shade range and I am excited about the full launch. The color match was spot on!

The Makeup Show is all about celebrating excellence in beauty and education by honoring Maurice Stein’s family with the Maurice Stein Business and Artist Award. Maurice Stein passed away earlier this year, and he had a career that spanned 60 years as a makeup artist for television, film, and commercials. Stein, who founded Cinema Secrets, was the first makeup artist inducted into the California Cosmetology Hall of Fame and he was a member and two-term Vice President of Local 706, the makeup artists and hairstylists union. Stein will be missed for his generosity and philanthropy working with burn survivors and helping them to approve their appearance and teaching them how to cover scars.
