How to Create a Skincare Routine that Works for You

According to My Experience

Skincare seems to be the up and coming trend of 2019. Considering the increasing popularity of self-care and the viral sensation that was the glass skin routine, 2018 had quite a big skincare to do and 2019 will be no different except for different trends. With this rise in taking care of your skin on the rise, I was intrigued and began testing and doing research to discover my perfect skincare routine. Now I am here to share the knowledge that I have obtained from my research.

1. Discover what type of skin you have.

There are quizzes online that you can fill out to discover your skin type or you can just observe whether or not you have dry, oily, or combination skin. This is not the only thing you will have to inspect about your skin but also whether or not you have hyperpigmentation or redness as well as acne or scarring. What you discover here will determine the rest of your skin routine but if you suffer from highly sensitive skin or chronic acne, I would recommend consulting a dermatologist about a skincare routine that they recommend.

2. Employ products that work for you.

Now you will be able to find and use products specifically for your skin type. For example, if you suffer from oily skin, find a cleanser specifically for oily skin and the same goes for dry and combination skin. After finding a cleanser, you may need a toner or skin mist that can even skin tone if you have redness or hyperpigmentation. You will also need a moisturizer—even if you have oily skin, a moisturizer is a necessity. Once again, find products specifically for your skin type and that work for you so some experimentation may be necessary to find the perfect products. Exfoliation is also a big part of skincare, but depending on your skin type, you can either deeply exfoliate twice a week or gently exfoliate every day. For deep exfoliation, I would recommend maybe a facial scrub and for daily gentle exfoliation, I would recommend a facial brush for when you use your cleanser. Also, using face masks twice a week are a wonderful way to feel luxurious and relax. All in all, find products that work for you and your skin type and use them.

3. Create your routine.

The first step for any skin routine is, if you wear makeup, remove as much as possible. Then cleanse your skin with your personal method that works for you and please refrain from using your hands. Next you should use your toner or facial mist and let that dry before applying moisturizer. The final step in any basic routine for everyone—even if it is your only step—is to please put on SPF. It is essential to your skin. Also, make sure to drink your water and stay hydrated. These are just the essentials to a basic skin care routine. There is always more to do like eye cream and jade rolling as well as serums. To get started, just do the basics and build from there but most importantly, stay consistent with your routine to avoid untimely breakouts. Most of all, just remember to have fun because if you don't make it fun you will feel like it's a chore rather than a way to take care of yourself.
