How to Fix Dry, Damaged Hair

Take your hair from dull and lifeless to shiny and healthy!

Between hair dying, bleaching, styling, the sun, and stress, everyday life can really take a toll on your hair. But there are steps that you can take to revive your hair and over time get your hair back to healthy—and even better than before!

Regular Hair Trims

Regularly getting your hair trimmed can immensely help your hair. Going every 6-12 weeks to cut off split ends is ideal. Not only does getting your hair trimmed make your hair look and feel better, it also can help those girls (or guys!) looking to grow their hair out. When your hair has split ends and you don't cut them off, the hair can continue to split up the strand, continuously breaking off as it goes and shortening your hair. By cutting off these split ends, you're preventing further damage to your hair and preserving the length of your hair. It also helps the hair look healthier, as the frizzy split ends are gone, and the ends of your hair look even and fuller with the damaged hair gone.

Deep Conditioner

Finding a deep conditioner that works well with your hair is important. There are many types of hair out there so not every deep conditioner will work for you. A lightweight deep conditioner might work well for fine hair, but on thick curly coarse hair, not so much. Read the label and reviews of different brands/products to find the type that works best for your hair type. Also look to see what the deep conditioner focuses on. Dryness? Damage? Softness? Hair growth? Decide what your hair needs most and lean towards those products.

How often you deep condition your hair is up to you and your hair. The best way to determine what's best for your hair is to start once a week and go from there. If your hair still feels dry, bump it up to twice a week. If it starts to feel limp and flat, try once every two weeks.

Oil Treatments

Oil treatments are a natural way to help make your hair and scalp healthy. Take enough oil to cover your hair and slightly warm it (do not make it hot!). You can use an applicator bottle or your hands to then work the oil through your hair and massage into the scalp. As with any other product, certain ones will work better than others for you—experiment to find the one for you!

Wet Hair

Using styling tools on high heat daily can cause a great amount of damage to your hair. Cutting out the use of these tools a couple days a week can greatly help improve your hair health. Practice some cute hairstyles, or braid your hair overnight for some loose beachy waves in the morning. There are plenty of options out there that will leave you looking cute, and with healthier hair!

When you do use styling tools on your hair, it's important to use a heat protectant. This can protect your hair against extra damage, and often adds a nice shine. Another tip is to turn down the heat on your tools. Use the cooler setting on your blow-dryer, and just because you CAN crank the temperature all the way up on your flat iron doesn't mean you SHOULD!

Eating a balanced diet also helps with the health of your scalp, follicles, and hair. If you feel you're lacking in certain nutrients there are vitamins you can take, and some that are made specifically for hair, skin, and nail health. Simply put: Take care of yourself and your hair will flourish.
