Makeup: What You Need to Know

What I Know

I love make up but I haven't always been that way. I don't know what changed but I'm glad it did. I don't like that I spend more than I want to at certain times but I enjoy using makeup. I'm also still learning and testing things out.

So there are some things that I must say before I go on. Don't feel bad if you are not the best at doing makeup. I'm not either. As long as you try to get better and you feel good about it, that's all that counts, right? Also don't worry if you can't afford the expensive products like Urban Decay and Two Faced. The $10 and under products work just as well and there is always the spray to set it or the primer you put on there before to make some of the non-long wear stuff stay. I got a $6 pack of brushes and they work just fine.

Ok so let's move on to the nitty gritty stuff. Where do you go to get your products? That really doesn't matter; I have gotten makeup and supplies everywhere. It's all about the budget. If you can afford the more expensive stuff, there are places like Belks, Ulta and Saphora. For the cheaper stuff there are places like Ulta, Walmart, Family Dollar, Olly's, and Target. Be careful with places like Ulta and Sephora. They don't clean some of their testers like they should. People have actually gotten sick from using the testers. Places like Walgreens jack up the prices. For example, a thing of concealer at Walgreens may cost you $9 or more but the same thing will cost $5 or $6 at Walmart. Amazon is also good if you don't need something that day. I haven't checked with other department stores like Penney's and Macey's, but it's worth looking into it.

Where do you learn to do make up? Well, it's different for different people. Some people can look at a picture on Instagram or Pinterest and figure it out perfectly. Others have to watch videos or have step by step instructions. Pinterest does have step-by-step pictures. There are places like Sephora that have classes based on topics like smokey eye. I haven't done that yet so I don't know the price point. I usually work off of what I have see on Pinterest or YouTube.

When it comes to getting your makeup professionally done look at what they have done and ask for pictures of their work. They should have before and after pictures. All pros should have pictures. Also ask about how long their looks last. If you have sensitive skin, ask about products used. They should have no problem answering questions for a potential client. If they can't tell you about products used or how long their looks last, you may want to book someone else.

When it comes to brands, it's a trial-and-error process. What I like you may not like—it's all about what makes you happy. I really like Ulta, Sephora, Wet and Wild, Maybelline, Cover Girl, NYX, ELF, Koki, and Make Up Revolution. If you are new to makeup, try those. Some of the high end stuff may not be worth their price tag but again this is where reviews and trial and error come in. If there are things in a product that are important to you, do your research about the products. There's a ton of products for sensitive skin or acne prone skin.
