Now, let me just start this off by saying I am no way hating on the makeup industry or makeup brands. I worked for a huge makeup company for about 11 months and in that short period of time I learned a few things about the makeup industry that I wish I knew going in. If you are looking or about to start working in a makeup company heres a few tips you should know before heading in:

Pros:

  • It's a busy work environment. If you are to work in a shop it is quite a fast paced work environment, especially if you work for a big retailer.
  • You get commission. Depending on if you hit your target or not you can earn quite a bit of commission on top of what you would get on either your hourly or salaried pay. It's a lovely little bonus.
  • Uniforms are smart. Some of the uniforms for some makeup companies are just "all black and stylish," but some are really smart and have to be worn to the highest standards.

Cons:

  • It's a toxic environment. A lot of people will know this already or just assume and that is why some people stay away. But I had no idea and it is a really toxic environment. A lot of the people are lovely at first. But then after a while you start to see behind all the fake demeanour and it's just a battlefield really.
  • Obviously... working Boxing Day. As a retail member of staff you will obviously have to work Boxing Day for the Boxing Day sales which I totally forgot about... until I was put in for a 9 hour shift. The department store that I worked for, refuse to pay for any taxis on boxing day even if you are working past the last public transport to get home. Getting home that night at 9:30pm was a nightmare.
  • It's a very hands on job and you will be on your feet all day.
  • It's a very demanding job. Lots of customers will come or ring all day long so you will be on your feet at all time.
  • Even if you're a people person... some clients/customers will definitely test your patience.
  • This will cause you a lot of stress when they ask you for something or demand something. It's just a nightmare.
  • Although these are just a few pros and cons. These are just a few reasons on what you should know before you head into the makeup company.
