What's the Deal With the Kylie Cosmetics Brush Set?

As If You Needed Me to Tell You

The $360 brush set in all of its glory.

Earlier this month, Kylie Jenner announced she would be releasing her first brush set. Not even moments after, the internet began to bash her over the price point: $360. She hasn't been able to make an appearance in public (only further feeding the pregnancy rumors), but she still managed to stir up some drama!

When the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star became aware of the backlash, she came to her own defense on Twitter, comparing her luxury brush set to ones created by Artis Brush, Kevyn Aucoin, as well as MAC.

Legends Only!

Alright, Kylie, your cosmetics company may be worth $420M, but don't get ahead of yourself!

First, let's look at the Artis Brush Elite, Mirror, 10 Brush Set and Artis Brush itself. These brushes are made with CosmeFibre, a type of brush fiber that has been engineered to produce a flawless finish when applying cosmetic products. The founder and creative director of Artis, Matthew Waitesmith, can boast that he has over 40 years of experience in the cosmetics industry under his belt. On top of this, Waitesmith was a former senior director at MAC cosmetics.

Next, let's examine Kevyn Aucoin's The Essential Brush Collection as well as his legacy. Aucoin was one of the most pivotal figures in red-carpet makeup before his death in 2002, and completely changed the makeup industry with his techniques and expertise. Yes, the brush set Aucoin crafted will set you back $650, but the brand has won awards for their brush collections and can boast decades of makeup expertise.

Finally, let's briefly examine the MAC Brush Set - Black and MAC 16 pcs. Professional Cosmetic Brush Set, as well as the company's background. MAC is one of the, if not the, most recognizable cosmetic brand in the business. MAC has been designing cosmetics for the past 33 years, and when your company sells more lipstick than any other non-drugstore brand, you have the right to sell your products at luxury prices!

Clearly, Kylie Cosmetics cannot compare to these iconic, cult favorite brands when her company isn't even two years old, and has not created any products that have changed the makeup game.

Beauty Gurus Know Their Sh*t!

Videos upon videos have been released critiquing the young makeup mogul's brush set. A few notable reviews include those given by beauty gurus Jeffree Star, Manny MUA, James Charles, and Laura Lee.

Star, MUA, and Lee all agreed that the packaging looked cheap, and Star even elaborated that it appeared as if it was from the Dollar Tree. Star and MUA also stated that it took longer to apply the foundation than normal, and Star claims that the brush ate up a lot more foundation, causing him to need to use more pumps of foundation than normally needed. Going on, Manny MUA claims that the brushes had a "pokey" texture, left streak marks, and shed on his face during application. James Charles observed that the fan and eyeshadow brushes did "literally nothing" as well.

The brushes earned 0/4 approvals from the gurus, and were considered overpriced for the quality by 4/4.

If you're not in the financial situation where you can purchase a $360 brush set, may I suggest one that is much cheaper and 100% vegan? Kylie may or may not have taken inspiration from this Wet n' Wild Luxe Brush Collection, but that's none of our business!
