Winter Weather vs Our Skin

Changing Our Skincare Routine Based on the Harsh Winter Weather Conditions

For those of you living in the bitter cold like me, we can see our skin start to suffer...

Bitter weather conditions tend to suck all of the moisture out of our skin making it dry, flaky, and itchy. Just like any season, our skin changes in the winter and so must our routine.

Let's go through each step...(I am not sponsored by any companies. All opinions are my own.)

1. Makeup Removers

A great makeup remover I just discovered was the Miel-en-Mousse from Lancôme! It is a makeup remover/cleanser duo. I prefer to use it just to remove my makeup, then follow with a cleanser fit to meet my skin's needs. This product contains real acacia honey and smells AMAZING. You apply it on dry skin, then with hands, massage the product into the skin. This creates a rich lather of foam.

2. Cleansers

You should always try and break down majority of makeup with a wipe/balm/remover before cleansing. Once done, picking a cleanser specifically for your skin can sometimes be confusing. I am going to list my favorite cleansers for each type and why I LOVE them. I have normal/combo skin, but I have clients with a wide range of different skin types.

  • Oily Skin: For my clients with oily skin, I like to recommend the Cetaphil Dermacontrol Oil Control Foam Wash. This product is awesome because it doesn't COMPLETELY strip the oil from your skin, but instead controls the oil production in your face. Oily skin actually is caused when the skin does not have enough moisture so the skin tends to overproduce oil. This product is not over-drying and keeps the skin fresh. You would still have to follow up with a light moisturizer.
  • Normal/Combo: For normal skin, I always recommend a basic deep cleaning face wash to keep the skin healthy and balanced. I will list below a few cleansers I have found and LOVED.
  • Dry Skin: The most common skin in the winter. Dry skin can be extremely uncomfortable and tends to give poor results when paired with makeup. As I always like to say, our makeup applies better when we have a clean canvas. I always recommend lotion/milk-textured cleansers for dry skin. It won't leave your face feeling super tight and irritated after use. I love how the product feels and how soft your skin feels after using it!

3. Toner (Optional)

I personally love to use a toner to put pH balance back into my skin after cleansing. It ensures my pores are deeply cleaned and is so refreshing on the skin! You don't need to purchase an expensive toner as well! I use witch hazel! It is a natural astringent and helps to remove excess oil from the skin! They make toners for dry skin as well that I love!

4. Moisturizer

The most important part of the skincare routine. Even my oily skin people need a moisturizer! It's a necessity in our beauty routine! Picking the best moisturizer for your skin can also be trial and error! In the winter months, making sure our skin is moisturized is so important. The dry, bitter winter air can suck any moisture out of our skin. You should always be applying when you wake up (before applying makeup) and before bed! Here are some of my favorites!

Hopefully this article helped some of you when deciding which products to buy! I have tried all of these products, and I feel confident in recommending them to others! Some things may not work for you and that is totally OK! I always recommend asking your local cosmetic store for a sample of the product before investing in it to make sure you are pleased with it!

Stay warm this winter!
