Your Masters Degree outside Academia
For some people, the master’s degree is a continuation of the path to a doctorate, for others it's a step up the pay grade ladder, and for some just something to keep doing after they finish their undergrad. Whatever the reason for pursuing the degree make sure you get the most out of it, especially if you're pursing a non-academic future.

Second Pregnancies
First off, I'll say now that I will always be pro-choice, no uterus no opinion, and will always respect those who are pro-life. I genuinely think that until the day you experience an abortion yourself, you will never understand the emotions, thought processes, planning, rationalities that come up for a person who is in the middle of making that decision. Religion or not, beliefs be damned, you're just not going to get it. It's difficult to describe beyond this, your mind will never have to or ever understand what going there is like, the flip of switches that take off upon hearing "your pregnant" but knowing it’s not your path.

Tokens and Fortunes
Shiny gold coins, which meant nothing to the real world, drove my childhood obsession. Not just having them, but the payout for tickets for the random crap that filled my childhood bedroom was especially enticing. Saving coins so I had more than my pals when we went back together, my ticket winnings was always more than my friends for this reason.

On Being a Pregnant Post-Grad
You won't fail to find articles, opinion pieces, tweets and memes about the plights of being a graduate student today. The ones that have emerged since institutions have haphazardly thrown together online only, mixed, in-person versions of their courses since the pandemic has graced us with its presence tend to be particularly witty and cynical. What you rarely find conversation about, are post-grads starting families while doing their degrees. Masters, Doctorates, Post-Docs who are expecting are largely absent from the mass writings.

Last April I purged the final big social media presence I had. At the end of 2016 I could be found on Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Wordpress, Spotify, WhatsApp, Starbucks, Strava, Pinterest, FitBit, and you name it, I was probably using it for a bit at some point.

I have an undergraduate education, and it is not enough. I started my master's degree chasing environmentalism, environmental resource management, and environmental planning. In each of the programs I was in, I saw more and more people return to school in search of a way to move up the corporate ladders and pay levels. I now have a master's degree in another field. I don't regret moving subject areas, and more importantly, I don't regret leaving a course-based master's for a thesis-based program. Here are some of the reasons why.
